Physical Education

The department has a philosophy of participation by all in an atmosphere of enjoyment and co-operation. Our facilities are outstanding and provide a basis for a wide and extensive physical education programme.

At Key Stage 3 students play a variety of different sports and learn a variety of different skills including movement and gymnastics, health related fitness, athletics, soccer, rugby, netball and summer sports. All Year 9 students have the opportunity to complete a GCSE P.E. taster course.

A course is available for Key Stage 4 students leading to a full GCSE qualification. Coursework is based on theoretical aspects of sport. Practical work involves pursuing various sports in depth in terms of skills, rules and regulations and covering a range of sports, for example, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, dance and games.

We field teams in soccer, netball, athletics, basketball and hockey. Staff organise a programme of lunchtime and evening 'club' type activities, for example, fitness, netball, badminton, cricket, soccer, aerobics, basketball and trampoline. The department's links with Stocksbridge Junior Football Club and the Sports Centre are very healthy and in the summer all junior school Year 6 students are invited to attend sports sessions as part of the transition process.
