Personal, Social and Health Education

In PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) we provide opportunities for our students to explore a range of themes in detail and from various viewpoints. The form tutors lead their forms through a variety of experiences and activities with the support of the Heads of Year and assigned staff.

The sex education policy in the school has been negotiated with the governing body, staff and students and parent representatives. Science covers biological details in a supportive and structured way according to age and development. In PHSE we teach this subject in the context of love and relationships.

Citizenship Education now forms a significant part of the curriculum at the school. The basic aim is to help prepare our students for their future responsible membership of the local, national and international community. The PSHE programme taught to all Year Groups contains Citizenship units, while elements of citizenship appear within all other curriculum areas.

The main aims are:-

  • To develop students' confidence and self esteem
  • To facilitate and enhance relationships between individuals.
  • To promote co-operation, tolerance and negotiation.
  • To broaden their experience beyond the classroom.
  • To provide education on sex and relationships.
  • To provide Health Education including drug awareness.
  • To deliver aspects of the Citizenship programme.
  • To provide Careers Education and opportunities for Action Planning.
  • To provide a range of situations and stimuli for students, where they can focus on issues and skills.
