History

The History department aims to give all students an understanding and appreciation of the past, in order that they can become informed citizens for the future. Through their study of History, students acquire vital skills for life and work, such as the ability to identify and explain causes and consequences, analyse and assess evidence, and reach independent judgements and conclusions. A wide variety of teaching and learning strategies are used to engage the students.

These include new ICT resources and software, role-play, feature films, discussions and debates, group work and investigations. To help them fulfil their potential students are regularly assessed and set targets for future improvement.

At Key Stage 3 we study the History of Britain 1066 to the present day but also allow students the opportunity to learn about other countries and cultures through topics such as ‘Islamic Civilisations’, ‘The French Revolution’,’ Empire and Slavery’ and ‘The Twentieth Century World’. Students may opt to continue their study of History at Key Stage 4. Year 10 and Year 11 students follow the Schools History Project course, including sections on the American West 1840-1895, Northern Ireland, Local History and the development of Medicine and Public Health through the time.
