Modern Languages

The Modern Languages Department teaches French to all students to KS3 level.

We take as our starting point the practical application of the language in realistic situations; we aim to teach students to understand and communicate in the target language using the four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Along with the development of language structures and grammatical knowledge, students study a variety of topics in Key Stage 3 including family, numbers, school, weather, transport, colours, leisure and holidays, environment, past, present and future opinions.

At Key stage 4, students may study a foreign language. Students choose between a traditional GCSE course and a more vocational course, NVQ Business French.

The students are involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities which enhance their understanding and enjoyment of languages; induction courses for Year 6 students from our feeder schools, French Club, taking part in a GCSE French experience, attending the ‘Your Future in Europe’ conference and a long-standing and successful exchange with our partner school in France (Bressuire).
