Science

Science needs an enquiring mind and imagination. It is used to explain our surroundings and ourselves. This means thinking about everything from the nucleus of an atom to the outer edges of the universe, with us as living organisms in the middle.

We don't find the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything - it isn't in the National Curriculum - but we do encourage students to ask questions and hope they will not lose the curiosity they had as a young child. We also, through questioning and investigation, help them to apply the knowledge they have gained.

In years 7-9 the new course we are implementing will bring a fresh and modern approach to learning science. The use of practical work, ICT and a range of teaching styles will help students achieve their potential.

During years 10-11 students study Double Award Modular Science. This requires 5 periods of science per week (20% of their timetable.) This involves them studying aspects of all three sciences with specialist teachers. The subject material continues from the preparation done earlier in the school and covers areas of human biology, environmental concerns, metals, structures and bonding, waves and radiation, the Universe and the origin of stars.
